About Me

Background

Where artistic enthusiasm meets tech—always learning, always creating.

Hi, I’m James Huang, an engineer, musician, and cybersecurity enthusiast passionate about solving real-world problems with a creative edge. I bring a unique perspective, blending technical expertise in cybersecurity and AI development with my background as a musician and designer.

I’ve had the privilege of conducting research at the Computational Memory Lab @ UPenn, where I worked on developing tools to analyze and annotate cognitive data for experiments aimed at advancing our understanding of memory and learning. Part of my work here involves programming video games in C# with Unity to test what we call the endogenous encoding of memories in non-invasive closed-loop environments (a bit of a mouthful, I know). Essentially, I build immersive 3D VR games that memory patients can play, while we monitor their EEG signals to the millisecond to predict moments when their memory is primed for learning, then deliver game objectives at optimal times.

Additionally, I work with WhisperX for automated annotation of lab data, where I help refine audio processing tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of data labeling in our cognitive science experiments.

Recently, I joined the Machine Learning Club @ UPenn, where I’m exploring federated learning and differential privacy to develop privacy-preserving machine learning systems that prioritize user security and data integrity.

My strengths lie in my ability to adapt and innovate. Whether leading initiatives to build AI-driven products, conducting ethical penetration tests, or creating music, I dive deep into each project with curiosity and dedication.

Outside of my research, I lead a band in the city and serve as Vice President and coach of UPenn's Boxing Club, where I help students build resilience and technique. I also run a music account on Instagram with over 10,000 followers and regularly publish music on Spotify and Apple Music as part of the Penn Songwriters Collective. In my free time, you’ll find me crafting songs, practicing languages (currently Russian and French), and exploring the intersections of AI, music, and cybersecurity.
